Small groups, so read these as a guide, not a price list. A buyer type with only a few priced deals says little. Method: method and evidence.
How a club sale works, in 5 steps
A general outline. Every sale differs by country and league.
- The owner decides to sell. They often hire an adviser, such as an investment bank, to run the process.
- Buyers are approached in private. Interested parties sign a non-disclosure agreement and get a short summary of the club.
- Offers and a data room. A shortlist sees financial and legal documents and sends offers. Price is for the shares, and debt is often part of the talk.
- Agreement. The buyer gets a period of exclusivity and the sides sign a share purchase agreement. Listed clubs must also announce it to the market.
- Approval and closing. The league and sometimes the government check the new owner. The sale closes when approvals are in and the money is paid.

Questions
How many football club sales are in this data?
Football Business Desk covers 54 club transactions from 2020 to 2026: 41 in Europe and 13 in North America. 29 of the 41 European deals have a reported price. It is a researched sample, not every sale.
Does this page list clubs that are for sale right now?
No. It lists completed and announced sales, so you can see who buys and what they pay. A club that is for sale now is usually marketed privately by an adviser, so it rarely appears in public.
What do the prices mean?
The price is what was reported for the stake bought, not the value of the whole club. A 10% stake and a 100% purchase are not comparable. Each price links to its source, and some are reported by media, not confirmed by the parties.
Who buys football clubs?
In the European deals here, buyers are private equity funds, sports investment groups, family offices, multi-club groups, consortia and individuals. 50 buyers are profiled on the buyers page, each with the clubs they own and their last deal.
How long does a club sale take?
It varies. From announcement to closing, the deals in this data take from a few weeks to many months, mostly because of league and regulator approval. See each deal page for its own dates.
